I really enjoyed this book, though I did have a few issues with it. It tries to toe the line between the scientific and the arcane, and I'm not sure it always works.
It was interesting, but just too gory for my tastes so I probably won't bother reading the other books. I'm just sick of vampires I think.
Guess who's dumb ass didn't realise this was a series when she read it
This book was very much a mixed bag for me.
The first half I found to be extremely creepy and well done. However, once past the 50% mark, things went downhill. I am far from squeamish when it comes to horror books/movies, but some of the descriptions here were just plain disgusting. The slow build of the premise became annoying, and I kept waiting for the action to pick up. The last act of the book, ended up being a little silly and over-done.
However, I am willing to give book 2 a chance, and am hopeful that the story moves along at a more enjoyable pace.

Guillermo needs to stick with movies. Liked the vampires (the stingers are interesting). As other reviewers have noted, this will obviously be turned into a movie, though I doubt a very good one. Cliches abound in this vampire "epic" - no new ground was broken. Unless I am again in an airport with nothing to read but People magazines filled with reality stars, don't think I'll be reading the follow-ups.
ε) Ενα λογοτεχνικο παραπονο: δηλαδη τα βαμπιρια ή θα ειναι τραγικοι αντιηρωες/υπερερωτευσιμοι μεταεφηβοι ή τερατα που απειλουν την κοινωνια; Αλλο ρολο δεν μπορουν να εχουν;

It's been a long time since I've been interested in vampires and all of that has to do with garbage like Twilight and Vampire Diaries and all the other teeny bopper vampire crap that has sullied the good name of the vampire. I picked this whole series up from a a used bookstore off a recommendation from a friend. Finally the vampire has been redeemed!!!
This book does just about everything right. It reinvents the vampire in just the right ways without abandoning the essential idea that is the vampire. They are terrifying, supernatural creatures that kill without discrimination. That is exactly what they're supposed to be.
The Strain is a complex and intriguing mystery revolving around vampires. I love the virus angle with this story. It puts a fresh spin on how vampirism has been created and spread. Setrakian is such an awesome vampire hunter. An elderly concentration camp survivor with a silver sword walking stick? Simply awesome. The whole team that combines by the end of this book is so mismatched it's both hilarious and awesome at the same time.
The Strain is such a fun read and really gets back to vampire roots while keeping thing interesting and fresh. The epilogue hooks you in and sets you up, not only for the second book, but a totally badass story line. Super excited to read the rest of this trilogy and I highly recommend starting this series right now.

3.5 estrellas
Me gustó en general, pero me desagradaron cosas en particular. Muchos momentos están bien logrados y otros parecen una adaptación de algo que quedaría bien en el cine pero no escrito. Algunos momentos "humanos" me aburrieron bastante. La idea de vampiros del tipo viral está bien, del tipo parasitario también (y un poco más original que viral) pero las dos cosas juntas no me convencen. O una cosa o la otra.
