I was pretty hesitant to read a vampire book after being completely traumatized with the True Blood, Twilight, Anita Blake crap out there. However, Pan's Labyrinth is one of my favorite movies... so I was willing to give Del Toro a chance with this book. I'm glad I did.
The storyline? nothing new... strange species threatening to take over the world... but what sets this book apart is the writing... the characters are brilliantly created. the best part? the vampires are not romanticized who can fall in love with humans. Seriously? please. They're evil and need to be killed. my kind of book. :-D

3 stars. First of all I would like to just take a moment to gush over this cover. Look at it! It’s the freakiest thing I think I’ve ever seen and I love it so much. It’s honestly what drew me to it. That and the fact that it’s co-written by Guillermo del Toro.
I remember watching a couple of episodes of the show years ago and not being all that impressed and then I proceeded to forget about it until I saw this badass cover on amazon and I was instantly intrigued. This was a lot of fun. It’s vampires in their true raw, murderous, and terrifying form. There’s a lot of body horror and gore in this and I don’t get freaked out easily but damn did this book make my skin itch. It’s absolutely disgusting but it was fun. I don't know what that says about me and I don't want to know. The world building was great and I thought the writing was good. It follows a shit ton of characters but the main characters, Eph and Nora were pretty interesting.
I will say that the only thing for me that I didn’t like was that the pacing was terribly uneven and it messed up the flow of the story. It just felt too unbalanced. Also, there are way too many characters and none of them except for a few really stood out or had any personality to them. But other than that I thought this was great. It’s very spooky and gross and entertaining. The vampires are terrifying and how people become vampires gave me the creeps. Fun times. I definitely recommend this if you’re into horror but if you have a bit of a weak stomach, this isn’t going to be for you. I’m looking forward to getting to book two.

3.5 Interesting. Good characters. Kind of smart. If you like disturbing scenarios and vampires, this is your book.

Being a fan of Del Toro films, I was eager to read this book. In general, I've enjoyed this book, despite a few flaws. I would give it three-and-a-half stars, if possible.
De view Del Toro has on vampires is interesting: finally - vampires as scary and otherworldly creatures instead of the beautiful and romantic vampires prevalent in the paranormal romances. Del Toro also makes good use of the decor of the city of New York.
You can easily spot this book has been written by a filmmaker. It seems to be cut in scenes from different perspectives and seems not so difficult to make into a movie.
Why I didn't 'love' this book? Difficult question, it has me pondering the last few hours, because it has so much that I do like. Thinking back on my reading experience I think it has something to do with 'flow' or 'intensity' of this book. It was not very difficult to put down. The storyline contains lots of repetition, which has a certain purpose but has de backdraw that for a good part of the book, the story lacks in building of climax.
Fortunately, it has an exciting ending which makes me very interested in de sequels.
