This art is STUNNING! & such an interesting story. I was super lost until those last 3 pages and then it finally clicked. Super quick read but very interesting. I definitely recommend if you want a little creepy, gothic horror for the upcoming spooky season

Well, this was a short but wild ride. As with Emily Carroll's other stories I was never absolutely sure I knew what was going on, but much like the narrator I got dragged along through the book's creepy twisty corridors at high speed to its inevitably gory conclusion. It's the artwork that really ramps up the atmosphere and is the real star of the show.
Come for Emily Carroll's art, stay for a super creepy story.

Incredible art! The art was very effective (excellent use of just the colors white, black, and red), and although the humanoid cat first wasn't my cup of tea, the cat appearance ties into other imagery in the story in a really layered way.
I liked where this short graphic novel was going with the tone and plot (spooky, sexy, gothic, romantic). The use of language, however, felt like it missed the mark: the language felt a bit convoluted, and like a first draft pass at trying to sound gothic, but not making much sense and not quite being gothic (e.g., "I could still sense her. Like a pulsing vein. Like a breath withheld ... slowly released through clenched teeth."). Regarding plot, I really like the idea of hidden backstories, confusing sapphic connection, and fairy-tale-esc horror. I also really like the idea of an artsy, erotic, scary ending. But, this is short enough to read twice in one sitting, and I still don't understand how this story comes together - and not in an "Oh, beautiful" way, but more in a "Huh?" way. Overall, this graphic novel seems to be more about tone/feeling than plot, which is generally fun for me, but again the language tripped over itself a bit too much for me + it's just a bit too confusing in a way that feels unfinished/not thought through, rather than purposeful.
So, again, I like where this is going with tone and plot elements, and the art is fabulous - but, this gorgeous short graphic novel just didn't click for me. And, it feels like it came so close to clicking!! Which is perhaps even more dissapointing.
