E.M. Carroll takes up space in my brain like no other. Their comics are to be considered, mulled over - they don't give their secrets away easily. Oozing with metaphor and symbolism, I Arrived at the Castle is poetic gothic horror to be puzzled over like a nightmare half remembered.

When I arrived at the castle is a dark, gothic body horror, leaning into the sapphic erotica ever so slightly (although the cover is rather misleading).

The art is absolutely stunning and the use of red and black as our primary use of colour was exquisite.

I haven't read many works from this author because I do find that Carroll's stories almost always leave me a little underwhelmed and confused and this was of that similar ilk, but I pick them up because they are gritty, macabre and the illustrations are absolutely to die for, even if the story itself isn't super powerful to me.

Loved the seductive vibes, attention to detail and the interpretation of the vampire character and I did find the concept quite fascinating (Bluebeard inspo?), just not as satisfying in execution.

Loved it, barely understood it but loved the pacing and intrigue behind it. Also worked super well as a graphic novel, the illustrations are ah-may-zing. Weird gothic fairytale vibes that I adored.
