It was ok... would have made a better poolside read. It was interesting, but not my favourite.

This book follows the story of Tilda/Tilly throughout her childhood and adult life. She feels disconnected from her mother, but learns that maybe things weren’t as they seemed when she was a child.
An eccentric read, with lots of description, making you really see the environment the characters are in. The problem I had with this book is I never felt connected to the characters. While I did enjoy the oddities of the book, I can confidently say, I won’t pick up another of this authors books.

This had really strong parts and some weaker parts. After reading & liking 2 of the author's books, I'll definitely keep going through the others

3.75 stars. Another cute story by author Ruth Hogan, though I don’t find this ending particularly satisfying.

I'm glad this was a short book and I was able to read it quickly so I don't feel like I wasted my time. I just didn't vibe with this one really. As usual I didn't refresh my memory on what it was actually about before I jumped into it, which was a mistake this time. I can't handle too much tragedy happening with kids and there's a lot of that in here. The whole thing was just very melancholy and I feel like I need to veg out with some Parks and Rec to get back on track.

I love that this book alternates between Tilly/Tilda’s childhood and adult perspectives. Often what we think is truth as a kid is vastly different from reality. I got a kick out of Tilly’s singing all the wrong words to songs and what she heard and called things she didn’t understand. I hate the “too late” type of ending and that made me sad.
One thing that jumped out to me about the mom’s mental state was that she was put into a facility not long after she had Tilly. Could that have been postpartum depression? It was in an era where that was recognized or dealt with in a healthy fashion. Perhaps the way that was handled impacted her confidence and mental well being the rest of her life?
