I'll be honest, I bought Shatter Me a long while ago and I picked it up purely for the cover as it's stunning.  I was a little hesitant to read it because I honestly didn't think I was going to like it that much but I devoured this book so quickly and I've already placed an order for the next few in the series.

The characters in the book are easy to get along with - Juliette, our MC, is just a poor soul and I love her amazing character development despite the book only being 329 pages long.  And Adam, I was so wary of him as at multiple points I didn't know who was the bad guy and who was our hero - deep down I'm still on the fence about him on that but I like his character none the less.

Genuinely, this book was unputdownable.  I feel like the rest of the series may be a bit up and down in regards to enjoyment but I'm here for it.  Would 100% recommend Shatter Me to anyone who likes a fantasy dystopian read.

okay I like to read books with no knowledge about what I am getting into

and lately that hasn’t been working out for me

but this book was good!!!!

it was fast paced and the writing style didn’t bother me like everyone was complaint about. It was giving Ellen Hopkins vibes for me. It also really made me relate to the main character, not because I have a power that allows me to kill everyone i touch but bc she seemed so alone and tried so hard to keep sane.

i read this book in a few short hours, it was good!  although when I really think about it this book gave you absolutely nothing.

so I bought the box set on a whim, so I have the second book already to go and I know this book is just a set up for what’s to come. But stand alone this book didn’t really give you any plot besides main character, Juliette and Adam trying to escape the prison/government? They were in. it didn’t really explain much of the war going on but I am assuming they were escaping the bad people (or from what it seems with just the first book) and ending up with good people.

although, I know book series like these are not always what it seems.

also the instant love connection between Adam and Juliette was a little fast. yeah childhood crushes are cute but they know absolutely nothing about eachother and already saying I love you.

also it was kinda hinted that Adam might have a power, maybe it has something to do with heat since he is always hot.

anyways excited to read the next one

This book is best read when in middle school or with the intention to not think too critically about it.
For a dystopia, the world building is very underwhelming, and for a romance, both of Juliette’s love interests are like walking Red Flags (not to mention they are only in love with what she represents to them tbh).
However, I really enjoyed Juliette’s character and her development! She’s consistent in her personality and, in the face of literally everyone and their dog telling her what to do, she calculates all her options and uses her own judgement to make her choices. That’s rare for a female character! I found her sense of loyalty and trust issues to be incredibly consistent and relatable! Her POV really elevates this series.

Juliette is 17 years old and has been a prisoner, locked away from society for 3 years. It has been an eternity since Juliette experienced physical touch because within her roils a power that is dangerous to those around her. Just one touch from her can cripple a man. Just one touch can kill.

Everything about this story was astounding. From the pacing, to the plot, to the characterization, the character ARCS, the dialogue to the climax. I was put off from starting these asI was worried they wouldn’t live up to the hype but man, they totally felt worthy of all the praise I’ve seen. I was left gobsmacked, reeling, crying, and literally whiplashed from reading this book and it was SOOO worth it!

For a YA book series, there’s a significant amount of steam between certain characters and it was nice to read a YA with gritty undertones and that erred on the older age bracket of the YA spectrum, allowing for some more mature content to slip in.

Just everything about this book was incredible and I would highly recommend it to anyone and everyone who enjoys fiction, especially YA dystopian lit with a romantic subplot.
