Oh man, I seriously struggled with this book. It is basically Twilight for an older audience, and SO much more boring. I get that the author wanted a lot of historical elements to the story, but my goodness it was tiring and so obvious that she was working it in. There were so many unnecessary things going on, the book could honestly have been at least 200 pages shorter, it just kept dragging on. Additionally, the story was all over the place, and I'm still not sure what the actual plot was. I have no desire to read the other books.

Actual rating: 4.5/5 stars

While this story was super interesting and every time I’d pick it up and read it, I really enjoyed my time. But it took my over 2 months to read. So I just can’t give it a full 5 or a high 4.5. So I’m going a low 4.5 because I still did love it.

It’s REALLY dense. I love all the magic. I love the history. I just should’ve picked a time to read it when I could have dedicated more time to it and not take 2 months to get through.

I like Diana and Matthew. I really like our cast of characters and the setting and how we see so much happen in one book. I am excited to see where this goes next because where it left off is super interesting.

Just wish it didn’t take me over 2 months to read.

A pretty good diversion, but a little longer than I needed and I’m not raring to get the next even with the non-ending of this one. I liked the overall premise although I found little to be very original related to witch and vampire tropes - the demons added some spice. The cat-and-mouse at the beginning between the main characters felt long and usually that’s my favorite part of romance storylines. I also didn’t love the level of deference by the woman witch to the male vampire. But I was interested in getting to the end.
