So much happened in this book! This is set the year after The Longest Winter and their life was, thankfully, so much fuller than it was during that cold, dark winter. Laura got her first job in town, Mary finally got to go to college, the cruel Nellie Olsen moved to the prairie, the new teacher had a real vendetta against the Ingalls girls, Almanzo began spending time with Laura, and Laura got her teacher’s certificate a year earlier than she expected. Whew! The book ended with Laura getting a teaching job in another town, which means she is going to move away from home soon and I don’t know if I’ll be able to take it. I’m on the waitlist for the last two books in the series and should be able to finish soon. I’m so excited to see how the series ends, because I’ve never read these last 3.

Debating if I should give this a 5 star instead of 4 - could barely put it down.

Update: I gave it 5 stars. LOL!!!

After the long winter, the whole town sighs in relief. Now there are socials, birthday parties, literaries, and a revival.

In this book, you can really see Laura's development. She's no longer afraid of strangers as she had been when they first arrived in town. She's found new friends and is even a little surprised that she's enjoying town more than what she thought!

My bubble is dashed after discovering what an ornery cuss of a teacher Eliza-Jane Wilder was! She was CRUEL to Carrie (who was very sickly-poor thing!) and Laura. Realizing Ms. Wilder and Laura were sisters-in-law....THAT MUST HAVE BEEN AN ACKWARD RELATIONSHIP (especially after all Laura wrote about her)! How could someone as gentlemanly and honorable as Almanzo have a sister like Eliza-Jane? Yikes!
