I don't understand why when writing a memoir you would cast yourself in such a bad light?

A really interesting and sad read but also very sweet and touching. Brian’s journey of accepting her heritage and her mother, while still accepting her other side was so interesting and touching to read, especially as someone who is in a similar, yet different, situation. The interweaving of the history of Okinawa, something that is so heartbreaking and ugly, was so sad yet fascinating to learn. Overall a beautifully flawed book about such a deeply personal journey of acceptance, in a community that really needs to bring more awareness to this issue.

As a hafu/hapa, this book was painfully and hysterically relatable. But it’s very clear this book is for the author more than for the reader.

Although I appreciated the author’s reflection on her childhood and grappling with her identity, I found the self-hate experiences that she included and the way she treated her mom as a kid too uncomfortable for me.
