Powerful, informative, inspiring, and entertaining. Similar to "Crying in H-Mart", this memoir moved and engaged me in so many intense, yet subtle ways. Highly recommend!

This was brutal. Not sure I’ve ever read a less likeable protagonist (and yes I know this is non-fiction) I thought I knew what it was to be a nasty teenager but wow… as soon as I finished this I went straight to my mum to tell her I love her and I’m sorry.

I love memoirs, I love getting to know about peoples lives, their relationships, their history, everything. Maybe I’m nosey, but also I like learning from what other people have experienced. Speak, Okinawa goes beyond one memoir, it navigates her mothers life, her fathers life, their relationship, and Okinawa’s history. I picked this book up not quite knowing what to expect, I picked this book up while visiting my parents and teared up more than once. The book is extremely transparent, painstakingly at times where we can see regret and shame of internalized racism and how the journey to unlearning biases and strengthen familial bonds is long and never ending. I called my mom right after finishing this book.

Mostly this just made me deeply sad.

“The power of visibility, of majority. Where I feel seen, rather than exposed.”

“Maybe it was always supposed to be the three of us.”
