I liked the concept of this book but Jessica, the lead female character, was irritating as hell. She should star in one of those horror movies where the girl makes every single stupid choice that's available to her. She's super-tight with her family but she ignores all of their misgivings about her husband, David? Even after David tells her his own story himself, and proves it's true in a horrific way, she still thinks this is okay? She's a journalist with otherwise good instincts but she buys all of David's lies without batting an eye? I'm not buying it, even if she is. Love is blind, but I don't think it's this blind for this long.

I had some major reading blocks during this book and I thought my gaps in reading would ruin it but it still ended up decent. I really like Tananarive Due's writing style and I liked the story. The characters were interesting. I liked that it had some political leanings without that being the story. Lots of heterosexual sex and some animal abuse/neglect I could have done without but that's personal taste, I suppose.

This was a rollercoaster ride! A long, slow build turned into a heart-pounding thrill before mellowing out into the end. Although dark, mysterioys, and borderline horror, the story isn't as developed as thoroughly as I would have liked. I loved the nuances of David's character (is he protagonist or evil villain?) I did not like the animal cruelty.
Graphic: Animal cruelty
Moderate: Animal death
