Another Amazing Series from Bella Forrest!

So, here I go again with one of Bella’s teenage female heroines and love it. I’ve read many of her series and absolutely love each and every one! Harley Merlin is no exception!

Quick read. Liked the magic element. Could have used more romance!
adventurous dark emotional mysterious tense fast-paced
Plot or Character Driven: Plot
Strong character development: Yes
Loveable characters: Yes
Diverse cast of characters: Yes
Flaws of characters a main focus: No

I am pleasantly surprised at how much I enjoyed this book. While the writing was on the amateur side, reminded me of Crave, the story was really interesting once I got into it. A very fun read and I might just read the other books in the series. A great gift from my grandma and I highly recommend it!!

I highly enjoyed this book it is a great start to an interesting series. I really liked the characters especially Harley and Wade they have an interesting relationship that could at some point change to how it is currently. I also really liked how Harley wants to be independent and I like that she is not a high school student. I really liked the plot it starts out with a young woman using her powers to find cheaters in a casino and it moved on to finding out about magic and many other very interesting things along the way. So overall I really liked this book and will continue the series at some point.

I’ve never read anything by Bella Forrest, though I have bought a couple of her books and they are on my TBR pile but my friend convinced me to pull this one to the top of the pile. From the moment I opened it, I could not put it down and read until I fell asleep every night.

This is a fast-paced action fantasy story with characters that come to life. Our main character is Harley who is 19 and getting her first taste of independence with a good-paying job. Then we meet Wade, who I assume is going to be the love interest from the blurbs of the other books I have read.

What he tells her after they save a man from a monster only the two of them can see and mind-wiping the victim, plunges her into a whole new world. I highly recommend Harley Merlin and the Secret Coven to all those who enjoy magical realism and mystery which will have you wondering if magic is real. Just like the Harry Potter series did.

DID NOT FINISH: 42%

I put this book down a while ago and had absolutely no interest in picking it back up. But Storygraph tracks things like that, so I decided to finish it and set the book aside for good. I didn't make it. It was OK. A bunch of people talking and I felt like I didn't know the Rag group at all. Maybe they have been introduced better or not bonded so quickly.  A bunch of people came out of nowhere and now they are friends. I need them to be in a life of death situation before that can happen. Anyways I got to about 170 pages, which I think is about 40% done.

Absolutely LOVED this book. Could not put it down.

Important definitions:

murmur:
say something in a low, soft, or indistinct voice.

mutter:
say something in a low or barely audible voice, especially in dissatisfaction or irritation.

Note to author: Please use something other than "murmur" or "mutter" for utterances, these words are repetitively and improperly used. Characters throughout the book will be described as murmuring or muttering, despite the scene or context. It doesn't make any sense to have characters muttering during an intense magic battle! It makes even less sense for someone across a field to hear them mutter things.

To readers: I read the first and second book in the series. I got 12% into the third book and just could not force myself to care. The main character is irritating, the other characters are inconsistent and boring. The ethnically diverse friend group is ruined by the egregious stereotyping done. The writing style is haphazard and immature - I get that the books are intended for a young audience but that doesn't excuse poor writing. By the third book I felt like I was reading someone's blog post, not a novel. I don't mind the occasional grammatical error but I felt like I was proof reading for editing.

It's a shame that the writing is so bad and the characters so unlikable, because I really enjoyed the world the author was setting up. I find the way that people in the world express magic fascinating and the covens/secret societies interesting. I was hopeful for a more grown up world similar to Harry Potter but this is not going to scratch that itch and perhaps it was unfair of me to expect that. If the author reads this, I don't want to discourage you from writing, from what I can tell after the first two books you're great with world building, and that's usually the hardest part. Focus on becoming a better storyteller and learning how people from different genders and cultures authentically interact. And stop having so many characters throw temper tantrums.

I have never returned a Kindle book before this series, but I ended up returning the third book after getting a few chapters in. Not only could I not finish the book, I just wanted it out of my Kindle library.
