Unexpected enjoyment!
I didn't really know what to expect with this book and you can't help but have Harry Potter in mind when you learn its about witches and warlocks, living in a secret world hidden from humans. There are certainly similarities. However this book deserves a try with an open mind. It's a little cheesy in parts with the dialogue but I flew through the second half - I didn't want to put it down. Great escapism, I loved the characters and I can't wait to reach the next book.

If you can think of a YA fantasy trope, it's here! (Minus, thankfully, the love triangles - for now?)
Interesting beginning to a series that gave me vibes of Harry Potter and the Shadow hunter world. Will definitely continue with this series.
It was not terrible, I should start with that. It was extremely predictable and an extremely fast read. Am I ashamed I read this? Maybe. Would I read it again? Probably. Will I finish the series? Definitely not.
If you’re a Harry Potter fan, this is definitely a book for you. I dribbled on an ad or something that marketed it that way so of course I had to check it out. And I was not disappointed! Plus, the entire series is on kindle unlimited! Which is even better! Great story line, great characters, great book all around!
I’m giving it 3.5. I liked the idea of the story, but some of the lines in the book were super cheesy. It felt like a 12 year old was saying them, not an adult. I have seen in compared to Harry Potter, and I can see the parallels, but definitely not close to being as epic as Harry Potter. Will I read more of the series? Probably. I feel invested in finding out what happens next.
I wanted so badly to like this book. The premise sounded interesting. I was put off almost immediately by the "I'm not like other girls" attitude of Harley. Still, I gave it a chance because the premise sounded interesting at first - an empath using her abilities in a casino to ferret out cheaters. I completely lost interest the first time Wade smirked. So it was going to be one of those types of books. The writing in this was so poor and so cliched that I kept waiting for Bella Swan or Christian Grey to pop up. Yuck. None of the other characters mattered at all. The plot with her parents was predictable. And if I have to hear her whine about her car one more time...Well, I won't, because I definitely won't be continuing this series. I understand this is a YA book and the whole ignorance about /why is he looking at me like that?/ thing is a common troupe. But come ON. She's an empath! And she doesn't understand the way Wade's feeling toward her? Give me a break. For a character who is supposed to be so smart and so logical she gets the entire San Diego Coven out of some deep shit with the mage counsel, her lack of understanding emotions when it comes to Wade is just idiotic. If you wanted to draw out the romantic tension, it would have been better if she just couldn't read Wade at all, like some of the other magicals. Oye. There's a few hours I won't ever get back.

A little too similar to Harry Potter for it not to be considered a copy-cat book. But I will probably still continue reading the series.
