Thoroughly enjoyed this book despite the main character being a bit MarySue-ish. Love the snark though and all characters are well drawn. I like the inter-dimensional concept of the magical world and am looking forward to read more.

I don't know why everyone calls it the next Harry Potter when it has more in common with Eragon: derivative plot, unlikeable characters, and mediocre writing.

Entertaining. Sort of a romance-ish rift off Harry Potter. I’m not sure that I’ll continue reading the series.

In general this book is well written and the characters are relatively 3 dimensional but I have reservations about the set up.

Harley is the female and older version of Harry Potter. She is found and brought into the world of wizards, pocket dimensions, coven house points, and is the orphan of murdered parents. There are so many similarities that it’s a wonder it got published what with JK Rowling being who she is.

If you want to read something similar to but not written by Rowling pick this up, it does have potential to be good, if a little sketchy considering how it compares to Harry Potter.

A solid 3.5 stars. It felt like if a non-sexist Harry Dresden had a book baby with the Shadowhunters series. Quick, easy read. Fun world, fun characters. Stupid main character name, BUT I enjoyed it, and will definitely read the next book.

Reading this book was like eating salt and vinegar chips; you eat the first one and think, “Blech, why do people like these?” but before you know it, you’ve eaten the whole bag. When I first started reading this book, it seemed like it was heading for two stars; I am not a fan of the informal / colloquial writing style. It also borrows heavily from Harry Potter in a lot of ways. However, the characters and the plot line saved it in the end, and I’m looking forward to continuing with the series.

Ok story but reads like fanfiction

Story has great potential but I was disappointed with the quality of the writing. The author doesnt show you emotions but tells you them (often in a contradictory way) and the pacing is too fast.

Harley Merlin and the Secret Coven. Where do I start? I picked it up in the first place because I heard it compares favorably to Harry Potter.

It is an entertaining story and it does indeed remind me of Harry Potter. And Harley is 19 when we meet her, which is nice in that it makes me feel less like I’m reading a children’s book.

I’m not sold on it, though. The biggest issue for me is that the book reads not like an inspired fan’s attempt to create a new magical world, but like a calculated attempt to recreate Harry Potter and make millions of dollars. And the similarities are glaringly obvious, starting with the main character’s name. Harley? Really? The author took Harry’s name and swapped out two of the letters at the end. Regardless of her name, Harley is a plucky orphan who grew up in rough foster homes, knows nothing about her parents, and discovers she’s a witch with rare and startling powers. I could go on, but I don’t want to get too spoilery. Just know there’s even a coven/house point system.

Ultimately, it was entertaining enough and Harley is likeable enough that I may read more of the series. But I’ll remain smug and offended on Harry Potter’s behalf.

Amazingly gripping

Amazingly gripping read, can't wait to continue with the series. Bella Forrest writing style is mesmerising and pulls you in from her very first words
