It was a fun book. It was sold to me as a great follow up to Harry Potter. It doesn't measure up to that series but was an entertaining read.
3.5
I really love the potential for the world she has built. Some great ideas, and an overall compelling structure to this magical world. I am just not into the style of writing and was unable to find myself connecting with any of the characters. The promotion for this book as “Harry Potter for Adults” did a huge disservice to the book cause I was expecting more. Def suffers from from George Lucas syndrome of having a good concept and very little ability to write it well.

I really enjoyed this. Someone else said this on good reads already. But, if you liked the Harry Potter series, then you will probably like this, too.
Fun story overall. As a San Diegan, I love that it’s based in my city.
Some aspects are corny. And don’t follow the usual rules of magic - like the whole beastiary thing.
Definitely Harry Potter vibes also.

This book is being touted as the Female Harry Potter but it definitely isn't. The story had a lot of potential and it was interesting enough but also annoying. It's full of plot holes and cliches and the main character isn't very likable. I'm undecided if I'll go on with the series as I had trouble finishing this book. I was constantly tempted to put it aside but the story was interesting. Unfortunately most of the characters are either annoying or redundant. I have a strong suspicion that this author is actually a group of people pumping out books based on what's currently popular.

This is a series I’ve wanted to sink my teeth into for awhile so I’m glad I finally did! Book 1 was excellent brain fluff — a fun FMC, vivid supporting cast, and lots of action. I definitely want to jump into book 2 soon.
Wow. That pretty much sums up my feelings of the book. I am a total sucker for magic in books. I eat that stuff up. I really enjoyed the character development in this book and I am really looking forward to continuing this series to see how they progress. My only gripe is that the romance is a tiny bit cheesy for my taste. But that's how any YA romance is for me nowadays.
Very entertaining. A good fluffy Harry Potter chaser. I will continue with the series to see how the characters develop. My only complaint was that Harley works in a casino at the beginning of the book and she is under 21. Not gonna happen in the real world.
3.75 Stars, a good start, couldn't get everyone's HP comparison out of my head though, will continue with the rest of the series which thank god it's already complete because I'm impatient
