I love getting to revisit some of my favorite characters as we meet what are clearly our new subjects but I can't help but feel this book was too long with unneeded back story (most readers have already spent 3 books learning many of these characters and the magic system).
That being said I still couldn't put it down.

I need the next one like yesterday lol

I remember loving the original trilogy, but i'm wondering if my tastes have just changed. I'm really struggling to get into this one. DNFing and might give it a try at a later date

This was hard to follow. I later found  out that ur follows a trilogy. So although this marketed as the first book in a new series, you really have to read the over series to have any idea what’s going on.

*4.5 stars*
Victoria’s evocative writing is highly enjoyable and makes 600 pages go by quickly. It’s a comfort to return to this world. Lila bothers me just as much as she did in Shades of Magic but I like the other characters enough.

Long story short, this book was massively confusing. I always look to see if a book is a first in series, and this one is...technically. about halfway into the book, I looked into the setting and discovered that, while it is a stand-alone series in the basic sense, you need to have read the Darker Shade of Magic series to actually understand what is going on with the characters (of which, there are too many!). I enjoyed the feel of this book, but since I lack depth for the story, I can only give it three stars right now. I intend to read the other books and then return to this one in hopes I can increase the rating.

Enjoyed this much more than I thought I would. Really well written characters whose goals are distinct and drive plot. Clearly set for a second book, and interestingly placed after some other large scale event, so if feels like the middle of a series rather than the start.

EDIT: lmao how did I not put together this is a sequel series to "a darker shade of magic"? I've READ that series. And didn't remember a gd thing. No wonder I was getting deja vu.
