Oh man... this book!! I'm sad to say I didn't love it AS MUCH as the Shades book, maybe similar to A Gathering of Shadows, which is why it's only a 4.5. It felt almost heartbreaking, to untie the knots so carefully done by Schwab at the end of Shades in order to make way for more peril, more darkness, more pain for these characters I love so much. And it did take quite a while for the action to ramp up. Most of the book was just set-up, a laying of groundwork. BUT! Did I still love these new characters? For the most part! (Tes you are everything to me) Did I still zoom through the pages when the action finally began? Well, of course! Am I still gonna finish this series? Obvi! V.E. is still one of my all-Time favorites! It just felt a little sad to prop open this door again. But as Schwab said, it still felt like coming home. And I missed my best boi Kell!

As I thought I would, I loved this book! A continuation of the Darker Shade of Magic, yet a whole new line of stories in its self. I love entering into the worlds that are created.
