An Interesting tale

I rather enjoyed this one. I found the balance of anthropomorphic and natural bee descriptions was done quite well. I read this all in one day and just couldn't put it down. I had to know what was happening in the hive and what would become of Flora. The prologue and epilogue were nice feels-y touches as well.

Incredibly well researched as to the different types of bees and how the hives communicates and controls the bee population. I abit too long but overall I will never look at bees in the same light after reading this book. Really like the comparison to a cross between Handmaiden's tale and Hunger Games.

This book is a bit of a strange one - overall, I enjoyed it but it's difficult to feel excited about it. I didn't really get hooked until the last third or so of the book, which I then finished in one sitting.

I don't think I've ever read a book as action-packed but in parts, this actually became quite tedious. It was like... Oh, Flora 717 has miraculously and against all odds evaded death from ANOTHER wasp/police bee/bird/weather related event, just the same as the last chapter, and the one before that... Not sure if this was intended as character building or to keep the reader interested but it didn't add anything for me. I read another review which suggested that all the threats to the bees were meant to instill the message that our real-life bees are in trouble but I think the bees in this story were too anthropomorphised for me to pick up on this message... Maybe that says more about the way my brain works though

I may not have really enjoyed this one, but if someone was looking for an offbeat dystopian novel I'd recommend it. I considered not finishing it, but then I started sharing absurdities from it, like drones bragging about their erections and holding workers with their strong arms. It didnt grab me until over halfway through, and I find the premise of bees with a religion and feelings (especially lusty feelings) to be a little too foreign.

If these had been presented as humanoid aliens, I would have been more accepting, but as it is, I just kept imagining these human sized bees walking around a hive.

I am always pleasantly surprised when I keep thinking about a book for weeks after I've read it. This book if full of political intrigue within a bee hive. This book was so unique, who knew I could be so attached to characters that were bees.
