Decent

Unlike the first two books on this trilogy, it doesn’t fill in part details we’ve gleaned from future novels (publication order is not chronological order here) - rather, it stands more on it’s own and has, at its core, a snap shot of growing up - for all the main players. It’s almost quick.

“Caught between glass and wood, that which breaks and that which bends, that which sings and that which survives. So our lives go.”

After I grew so attached to Amberdrake and Skan, I was annoyed to learn that in this book we would be following a whole new set of characters. But what made this work for me was how it offered a unique take on the meaning of legacy. Both Skan and amberdrake are powerful magic users with reputations that their children feel pressured to live up to. Instead of forcing their children to follow in their footsteps, these two parents’ true “legacy “ is letting their children follow their own paths.

I also loved how Blade and Tad had a similar relationship to Skan and Drake. It was cool to see that the bond formed between human and gryphon is something that can carry on through generations.

The end was a bit anti climatic

The main plot is better suited for a side story or a short story. Certainly wasn't enough going on to warrant a 400 page book.

Lackey and Dixon intertwine genres well, creating an interesting fantasy survival story. Their compelling characterization continues in this finale.

However, they still struggle with an ending that feels a little rushed and unnecessary changes in point of view.

I thought this was the slowest of all three books, but it was enjoyable. It follows the children of the first two books and they are likeable characters but the parent/child drama to me was a little stiffly written.

I did like the suspense but survival is not really my thing. It is really interesting that the author took the risk of writing three different styles, but it does result in a hit and miss situation. This was a little of a miss for me, but I do like mystery and liked the uncertainty of the enemy and loved the actiony parts towards the end.

Also really appreciate the continuity of the relationship between White Gryphon and the Black Kings. But overall the book was a bit of a slow slog.
