I took this from my parent's bookcase when I was home this past summer. Just decided to pick it up and am finding it very insightful into how my mother must have been truly "in love" with drinking. So far I'm just in the first 1/4 of the book - and her description of herself as a highly functioning alcoholic isn't quite what my mom was (wouldn't say she was high-functioning), but many of the descriptions she uses strike home and sound very familiar to my experience. I wouldn't say I'm enjoying reading this, so much as I'm intrigued and feel somewhat compelled to read this, especially as I know my mother read it.

A very difficult book to get through. Caroline Knapp holds nothing back. Recommended for anyone with a "drinking problem."

OMGosh, y'all, let's just all quit drinking alcohol right now! It is so incredibly bad for us. It has caused so much pain, so much tragedy, often over generations. It just blows my mind when I really take a frank look at it. So glad this woman recovered.

I never know how to rate these books since they inevitably describe the life of someone who's a hot mess. This one is impressively clear-eyed, though, and very insightful.

Very well written and nicely narrated. A brave story to tell.

This was a reread... At least 25 years between reads (wut!?) and my perspective had changed but still loved this book and the self awareness Knapp showed. I do think it could have been a lot shorter but it was a beautiful memoir all around. RIP Caroline.

Outstanding.
This is one of only a few books I wish I had on my bookshelf to pick up and read from time to time. Caroline's relationship with alcohol was more intense than any relationship I know of. And breaking up was hard to do. I have much respect for the late Ms Knapp.

I found the section she wrote about her early 20s about the impact of alcohol on her developing a sense of self and therefore an ability to set boundaries with men especially powerful and timely (even though this book was written 20 years ago). The cucumber/pickle metaphor later in the book could potentially be helpful with clients and is something to remember. A great memoir--I felt so sad when I finished and saw on the about the author page that she passed away only a few years after publishing the book, in part because she had only just reached a place of balance and sobriety and probably also because I felt a degree of closeness to her after reading the book.
