bro im kinda getting tired of reading this tbh & I didn't finish it in time.
I read this after seeing a friend recommend both of her books. I read this shortly after You Should See Me In a Crown. Leah Johnson is a great author, and I've loved both books I've read by her.

My Rating: ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️.5
My Overall Thoughts/Impressions: Leah Johnson delivered with her second YA novel. I had to listen to this one on audio because that was the only format my library had it in, which I don't typically like to listen to fiction, but the audio was well done here.
Leah crafted compelling L/B characters who were already out and let them explore and grow into themselves. She also artfully tackled some difficult themes like gun violence, violence, and the pressure teenage girls can face sexually and double standards there. She has a way of tackling heavy issues without being overhanded. Another great one by her. I hope she continues to write more YA books soon.
I love the rich and vibrant diversity she explores in her books. I'm happy she's now writing some MG, but I hope we see more YA from her soon too.
Content: Very few instances of strong language, violence, gun violence. The author's content warning also mentions a few others that readers may want to know about.

3 stars. I prefer the romance in this one but You Should See Me in a Crown had the better overall story in my opinion. This one felt like a rough draft. It feels so incomplete and there’s way too many loose ends and I just was frustrated by it all. I wasn’t expecting this to be the most well developed thing as it takes place over a three day period but there was way too much going on and none of it really leads anywhere.
As for what I did like, again I thought the romance was very sweet and I thought both characters were interesting. Toni and Olivia both had a lot of emotional baggage going on with them. They fall in love super quickly but I found that I didn’t really mind. They were just too cute together.
Olivia is a hot mess and I felt for her. She loves love and because of that she gets her heart broken a lot and is at the point where she thinks she doesn’t deserve love. Toni is still dealing with the murder of her father and her relationship with him prior to his death as he was never around for her. Great. Both characters had so much going on but it’s never fleshed out and it’s all so surface level.
The writing is good and I liked the setting of a music festival but everything about the plot is too rushed. It’s a quick read but I wish that I had loved it a lot more than I did because it has all of the elements to make a great book but it just misses the mark.

Oh my gosh this was so nearly a perfect book that I can’t bring myself to give it less than 5 stars!! I feel giddy having just finished it, like that epic post-concert high, only I was only reading about it, not living it myself.
The vibes in this book were immaculate tbh.
That festival air, the music, the community, all of it made me so happy.
I adored these characters so, so much. They’re messy and flawed and emotional and damaged in such real, believable ways. There were so many moments where I just wanted to reach into the pages and hug them, tell them it’ll be okay, give them a pep talk and remind them it’s okay to not be okay, too.
Olivia reminded me so much of me and as a result, she frustrated me sometimes, but that didn’t make me love her any less. The way she felt too big, like she’s too much, like she should tone herself down but was incapable, resonated with me so much. I’ve felt this through so much of my life, and I just wanted to hug her so, so much. Also the innocent teenage hooking up, the “slutty bisexual” stereotype pinned to her, the thrill of the chase, all reminded me of me at that age, too. I can even forgive her for being a crappy friend.
Toni couldn’t be more different from Olivia if she tried, and maybe that’s why I adored her so much. Her journey through this book made my heart ache in the best way. Learning to open herself up and let people in despite the fact that they might hurt you is so hard and I was so proud of her for doing it anyway.
Imani and Peter were both fantastic side characters, too. They both felt fully fleshed out and utterly loveable.
I can’t recommend this one enough!
