After losing her temper and getting into a fight with her team captain, hockey player Alix enlists the help of a theatre kid named Ezra to give her tips on how to keep her cool, when she witnesses him interact with a bully.
I absolutely adored this graphic novel!
What made the story and artwork genuine was the fact that the author consulted a couple people who were very familiar with the sport. (Her husband was a former hockey player 😆)
Both characters were different in their own way:
Alix struggled with developing relationships with people and was a bit of a walking doormat (outside of hockey)
but by the end she stands up for herself and makes a group of friends.
Ezra delivered incredibly witty comebacks and was basically the human version of a golden retriever, just really sociable and outgoing.
Yet both characters had one thing in common:
Family issues (they do resolve it in the end and it was so heartwarming to see that 🥹)
I also loved how Ezra's sexuality was handled. His friends suggested that he should put a label on it (even mentioned bisexuality), but he wasn't sure if he fit into that category, nor did he feel the need to put a name to who he loves. I think it was one good example of how everyone's journey is different.
I would recommend this 🩷

This was an absolute delight to read! It was so refreshing to see a girl being the one in sports and a boy being the one in theatre. I loved getting to see Alix growing as a person and finding that she can actually stand up to her teammate/bully. I also really loved that Ezra was still figuring out his sexuality and didn’t want to put a label on it and just dated whoever he was interested in regardless of their gender. It was so nice to see rep for queer people who don’t want/need a label! I really enjoyed the way that Alix and Ezra became friends first and let their relationship develop into something more. Plus the way that Ezra was smiping after Alix was absolutely hilarious. Hockey Girl Loves Drama Boy was so much fun to read! It’s getting four stars from me. 😊
