‘Hockey Girl Loves Drama Boy’ is a sweet, feel good, coming of age, opposites attract romance about two high schoolers figuring out what they want and who they want to be.
I really enjoyed reading this graphic novel, it was a fun quick read, which also tackled gendered centred stereotypes. Usually we have the girl who is the one who loves art and the boy being more of the athletic type. But here that was in reverse, it was a refreshing outlook on the stereotypes we usually see. Even though the MCs are in complete contrast to one another, they still blend well and the relationship that is formed between the two is an organic one.
Another thing I loved about the graphic novel is that is touches upon how we sometimes assume others are horrible people because the may associate with others; but that’s not always the case, so we should be more mindful to the fact. The bullying and anger management aspect of the story i also found to be well done. It demonstrates how bullying plays a big role in high school, the portrayal of both Alix and Ezra’s reactions to such incidents were very realistic. It shows that there are two way to deal with a bully, not everyone always has the same reactions. But sometimes there is a right and wrong way to go about dealing with bullies.
The great thing about the novel is that it explored the sexuality of young people. The usual consensus is that young people don’t always understand or know what their sexual identity is. I found that the graphic novel did a good job in showcasing how young people sometimes know who they are. Ezra was portrayed as a young boy who knew who he was. He didn’t want to label himself but he was also comfortable in his own skin.

I really liked it, but the story seemed incomplete. I hope the author goes on to turn this into a series because it was super adorable and want more.
