The Lord of Stariel (Stariel Book #1) by A.J. Lancaster.....

Full review to come.....

This book is definitely a slow start. I ended up putting it down for quite a while before picking it back up.
The beginning is a lot of set up that doesn't seem to be going anywhere, then around the 50% mark takes off. I enjoyed the second half, and grew to appreciate the time spent going through things in the first half of the book.
Looking forward to seeing what the next book in the series brings.

This sounded exactly like the kind of book I would love. And even while I was reading it, I kept thinking "I should be loving this story."
I mean, this story has an independent, powerful FL. A mysterious, beautiful butler as the ML. A mystery involving the inheritance of a semi-sentient manor and its land. Magic battles. Slow-burn romance. Honestly, these tropes are like catnip for me!

But despite everything mentioned above, I didn't like this book. The writing and characters were just so... dry, is the best word I can think of right now. Everyone in the story just felt like they were lifelessly going through the motions of what they were written to do, with no real soul or personality.
I felt no emotional connection to the characters, and no emotional involvement in the story. The most emotion I felt while reading this book was when I came to the last page, and felt genuine relief that the story was over.

Really enjoyed this fantasy, especially the main character and the magic
