Underwhelming ending to the first book in this series. It was originally planned as a five book series, but was reduced to three books, so this book really ends in what would have been the middle of book 2. Also, there are several stretches I found quite boring and even put the book down for almost 2 years before finally plowing ahead and finishing. There is some stuff in it that I really liked, thus the 3.5 stars. I started reading the sequel and decided not to continue after several chapters, mainly because others who have read this series say the things I didn't like don't get better as the story progresses.

The story and writing were pretty good, the pacing was decent if a bit long-winded. But, the characters were a huge weak point for me. I don't have to like the characters but I do have to at least find them interesting, the characters here however I merely felt a range of disinterest or mild disdain towards any of them.
