This book is epic fantasy in the erstwhile tradition of A Song Of Ice And Fire by George R R Martin, Memory, Sorrow and Thorn or The Last King Of Osten Ard by Tad Williams. Readers of either or both series (like me) will find much to appreciate and love in The Forgetting Moon.

Well-written with a very intriguing premise, pacing on point, strong characterisation and multiple POVs handled with expertise, The Forgetting Moon had me immediately reaching for the sequel The Blackest Heart to find out what happens next. An excellent beginning to an epic fantasy trilogy.

A special shout out to the author for the beautiful introduction and acknowledgements which had me motivated to read the book from the get go.

This book had a lot of potential. Not much happens really other than world building and setting the stage for the next book. It has a really interesting plot but was heavily HEAVILY weighed down by some of the worst side characters ever written, they were so bad that I dreaded reading every chapter of their storyline. One character who happens to be an overweight girl (author likes to mention this fact constantly) never stops talking about eating, blames everyone for things outside of their control and is generally insufferable. Another character literally pooped and peed his pants at least three times, he’s like 17 years old. I probably would have given the book at least a 4 star rating had these characters been killed during one of the multiple opportunities presented, alas I will continue the series just in hopes that these characters suffer tremendous deaths.

I love epic fantasy and this story is definitely that. This book has some tropes that I love including prophecies and chosen ones. There's a castle filled with secret passages and rooms (I could spend an entire book sneaking in these passages). It also includes interesting politics and a huge focus on religion. The reason this book didn't completely work for me was that I felt for as long as the book is we didn't get enough growth of the characters or plot. It leaves off at an intriguing point, so I'm definitely going to continue the series, but I did wish for a bit more from this book.
