I enjoyed the 'Death and the maiden' concept at work here. It's one of my favorite tropes. Mostly, I just didn't love Keturah as a character, though she did have some really lovely diaglogue/thought processes right at the end. Prior to that she read a little too young and shallow for me.

It reads like an old fairy tale. The writing was simple yet hauntingly beautiful, the story has this melancholic vibe that keeps you hooked from the beginning to the end. Loved the ending. Fun read!!!

Lovely, lovely fairytale. Weaves familiar characters and plots into a strong cohesive whole. Yes, it's mostly fluff, but it is YA and it's not meant to be anything groundbreaking. This is the kind of book I ate up in middle and high school. In its defense, it's a quick read and once I started, it was nearly impossible to put down. Not a National Book Award Finalist for nothing.

It's a folk tale in every sense of the word. Short and sweet, set in its own time period, and briefly descriptions be. The characters are fairly fleshed out for a folk tale (say that three times fast lol). A fun read.

This could have been better had there been more plot other pies but it was a nice, small read. I enjoyed it for what it was.

A good fairy tale-style story. I didn’t love how characters feelings would change without much precedent but it fit into the style of story telling. The ending was a thinker and metaphorically charged. A nice story overall.

The beginning was a little rough for me but as the story unfolded I began to like it more and more. Somewhat predictable but the simplicity of the story won me over by the end. An easy, quick read that is well worth the few hours spent on it.

For such a short story, I thoroughly enjoyed every second of it. The lessons to be learned in this book were very clear and so touching. I loved the writing style and adored all of the characters so very much. It's so easy to find yourself living there with all the characters and being a part of their lives over the few days the book takes place. Will absolutely read again.

this probably would have been 4 stars, if not higher, if the MC didn’t spend literally half the book baking a pie
