I'm not usually into thrillers, but I gave this one a chance because it is about a hacker/cybercriminal, and found it very gripping.

Even though this book was written more than 20 years ago, the danger of hacking is still real today.  It is quite alarming to see what people can achieve with technology, and this fear is still very much applicable in the era of AI.

Even if you're not someone who understands technical jargon, this book does a great job of breaking down complex terms into clear explanations, but some technologies are currently outdated.

This book had me hooked with all its surprises and mysteries. I kept trying to guess who Shawn was, but I was totally off track. What I really liked was how the story switched between different points of view. It gave me extra info about the hacker and what he was up to.

Wholeheartedly, I'd recommend this book to anyone who relishes gripping psychological thrillers interwoven with technology and mystery. It's a fascinating read for anyone intrigued by the fusion of technology and criminal intrigue.

Back in 2010, I read this book 3 times in a row in the car, back to back during our family trip to Niagara Falls. At the time I was extremely interested in computer security (still am), but I was very new to the subject. I learned lots of interesting stuff from that book (like the 2600 magazine). If I read this book today I probably would not give it 4 stars...I prefer it stays like this. A book I really enjoyed as a teen, but not worth revisiting later in life (don't want to ruin my enjoyment).

Come thriller appena passabile, e il ritratto del "mondo hacker" abbastanza dettagliato (anche se risalente a 10 anni fa).
L'analisi delle conseguenze sociali della rivoluzione informatica per decisamente superficiale.

Deaver delivers a very good, fast paced thriller with plenty of twists and turns that made this reader continue forward as quickly as possible. The internet hacking plot stands up even in 2016 despite the technology advances since it was written.

My first Jeffrey Deaveer thriller and I'm impressed. The book kept me guessing the whole time and I didn't see the end coming.

Deaver certainly knows how to keep you reading. Begin the book with a young woman's murder from her point of view. Set up the investigation with a likable former hacker with a likable plain-as-oatmeal name of Andy Anderson. Then pull a trick from Hitchcock's Psycho bag and have the serial killer Phate kill him. Set the audience up when the killer next targets a lonely boarding school computer prodigy (don't kill him!) followed by an eight-year-old kidnapped for the second time (don't kill her!) and then the new main cop's pregnant wife who's undergoing tests for possible cancer (don't kill her!) Intersperse these with lots of check/checkmate moves by the killer and the hacker working for the police. Okay. It's done so skillfully I didn't even mind being so manipulated, however the ending was so far off the charts the author totally lost me. A secret agent assassin paid by the big internet companies finishes Phate, but shenanigans continue as the partner Shawn turns out to be a super computer capable of devious independent action.

Really? I think not.

Wow! That was brilliant, it was the first psychological thriller i've ever read and it was brilliant. I kept thinking i's figured it out but no, but wow that was amazing!

Waardering:
