A solid 2.5 stars, mostly for the pacing and the twisting and turning. I read this twice when I was a teenager, not long after it came out, and revisiting it and finding how poorly it aged was a bit of a disappointment. I should probably have let this live on in nostalgia, though.

I've read and re read this book perhaps 4 or 5 times in the last 10years. After The Bone Collector it is my favourite Deaver book.

Well written, clear in even the most technical of descriptions and thrilling to the final chapter, this book is very enjoyable for either a short bit here and there, or a long haul reading jag

I'd recommend this for computer fans, thriller fans or possibly for someone just looking for something a little different than a normal crime orientated story

I thought this book had a slow start, but once I got into it (after maybe 100 or 150 pages), I liked it. The story revolved around technology, which was problematic because it was published in 2001. It talked about dial-up modems, which I hardly even remember. Young readers may have a difficult time connecting to some of the technology talk, but I was able to look past most of that and just move on with the understanding that it was written in a different time (even though it is so relatively recent). I wish Deaver would publish a second edition of the book where the plot was the same but the technology was updated. That would have made it a lot more interesting.

Overall, I would recommend this book but with some reservations. If you are a person who needs to get into a book right away, you might end up quitting on this one before it gets good. Also, if you are going to be bothered by the outdated technology, you may want to pass on this book. Otherwise, it was an interesting mystery with a number of unexpected and entertaining twists along the way.

It's not The Blue Nowhere's fault.

If I'd read this in 2001, around when it was published, I would have given it a higher rating. The plot is the type of action-packed mental popcorn you expect from Jeffrey Deaver (although I did notice his character development is better in his more recent work). It's also got some interesting ideas about privacy and data that are incredibly relevant today.

However, the book aged very badly with respect to the technology it describes. Very, very badly. Almost everything described in the book as cutting edge is either low level today, or obsolete (hello, floppy disks--and even the hacker's "state of the art" Zip disk). The technology is such a part of the plot that having it be this out of date is distracting.

I wish I'd read this book 15 years ago.
