I liked the beginning of the book, to know how it all started throughout the generations of the Maia family. This book captures really well the society of that time. The way he talks about politics, the women, the luxury, the idleness...
I really liked Eça's writting and the way he describes things (but sometimes a little bit too much). The writting is fluid and easy to read which is good considering this a classic book.
However, one thing I don't really apretiate in books is long chapters and in this book the chapters are very long. I also think that the book could be shorter, there are a lot of things that could be deleted without interfering in the story.
I think that this book would have much more impact on me if I didn't already know the story and the plot at the end because I had to study the book in high school but I didn't read it back then, unfortunately./p>
Eça de Queirós describes every little detail to its extreme. The way the story develops itself is seriously 10/10 and I'm very glad they keep teaching this book in school... the kids of nowadays need to know how good their literature is. Not to brag about my own country but Portuguese literature is really something else that truly deserves to be studied for a long time.
