Li-o num verão, em que tinha muito tempo, quando um livro com tantas páginas ainda me fazia suspeitar. Como é que se demorava tanto tempo a contar uma história. Tinha tentado passar da descrição inicial, numa primeira tentativa, mas os meus 16 anos eram muito impacientes e deixei-o de lado. Depois, quando dei por mim, estava vidrado em algo que me parecia uma novela. Queria, página após página, saber o que acontecia àquelas personagens. Queria saber das suas ligações amorosas, dos seus comentários e do seu discurso tão ardiloso e eloquente. Ganhei-lhes afeição e intimidade. E o livro não chegou para o verão todo.

This Portuguese classic narrates the everyday of the 3 generations of the Maia family and all they go through, including love affairs and family drama.
I mostly enjoyed reading this book not because of the storyline but because of the beauty and simplicity of the writing. Eça had a really modern way of writing when compared to his contemporaries such as Camilo Castelo Branco. However, in conversation with some family members who are quite big Eça appreciators, I have been told that in this book the writer’s modernism is not as notable as in other books, since this story is too deep and emotionally heavy, limiting the author’s liberty in writing. I’ll have to read more from the author in order to develop my own opinion on that matter.
I read this book compulsorily for school, but I have actually enjoyed it and found it had really light-hearted segments as well as very intense ones. I would also like to depict the actuality of the story, since the themes that were mentioned still happen today.

a minha professora disse que a segunda leitura é muiiiito melhor que a primeira. tinha mesmo razão. tirando a descrição toda, o livro nem é mau de todo. aliás, até gostei.

gostei muito mais deste livro do que achava que ia gostar. comecei a le-lo em Novembro mas estava sempre a pô-lo de lado, finalmente no inicio das aulas decidi que tinha realmente de pegar nele e li o livro todo em duas semanas. acho que teria gostado mais se tivesse lido com mais tempo, pois chegava a alturas que só queria despachar o livro. Ao contrário de muita gente o que gostei mais foi da escrita do Eça em si, mas o meu problema foram as personagens, não posso dizer que gostasse de alguma.

This was a mandatory reading and whilst it wasn't as bad and intimidating as I thought it would be, I preferred analysing the book in class as opposed to actually reading it.
Although I can appreciate that this book is in fact a masterpiece, it was really slow and boring at times.
