Very well written the only mistake that Eça de Queirós made was making it a slow paced book because this book is actually really interesting. The way that he represents the Portuguese society is so raw and we can even compare it to nowadays (not a lot has changed). The discussions dealing with strong political and social views are really captivating. Recommend it 100% especially if you're Portuguese!

Já o tinha lido apenas nunca o tinha classificado nem pensado em fazer review. Não sei se merece review ou não

Tons of descriptions. Kinda realism. Mostly still romanticist.

The characters were somewhat shallow and all upper class so I failed to develop real sympathy for them. As a result, I never lived this novel though it was quite long.

A lot of social protest and complaints but little insight into the ordinary lives. That sucked.
The deep, dark secret of incest leaks through the plot obviously early on. No real intrigue.

I read this book last summer and I'll read it again next month for school and I do hope this second time will be different. The first chapters were so hard for me to get into the story, because Eça de Queirós' writing has so many details and at the beggining I thought that they were unnecessary. But I really enjoyed the last chapters,
because of Carlos and Maria's love story and I was truly sad for them when they found out they couldn't be together cof cof incest cof cof

I hope that in a few years I could read this book again, love it and give it 5/5 stars ... for now, only 3.
