I am amazed at how much I enjoyed a book about something I know absolutely nothing about. This was an amazing listen! Appreciated the opportunity to ponder all of the sobering historical facts. Amazing book!

This is such an inspiring story with such dynamic characters. It’s also fun to read a book mostly set in and around your hometown, especially when you can glimpse how it was way back when. Other than some rather unfortunate mispronunciations, Edward Herrmann’s warm tone of voice was the perfect narrator for the audiobook too. Highly recommend!

Before this book, my knowledge of the 1936 Olympics in Berlin was limited to Nazis and Jesse Owens. Before this book, my knowledge of competative rowing was that it was the sport tied to the college admissions scandal of a few years ago. But I loved the author's book The Indifferent Stars Above, detailing the Donner Party and figured "why not?" This turned out to be an amazing story of the triumph of teamwork and will, of a bunch of rough and ready college boys trying to lay for school during the Great Depression while overcoming elitism in their sport and becoming possibly the greatest rowing team in history (certainly to their date). It has all the usual sport story hallmarks, the underdogs rising up and triumphing from near defeat. But it's a rich biography of the rowers and their coaches and an explaination of the sport that got even this "apathetic towards sports at best" reader rooting for them.

Very well researched and written. The audiobook narrator was perfect. During the detailed descriptions of races, body form etc. I became impatient. I loved the stories about the people, and the history. It really is an epic story.

It was hard for me to finish. I think partially because the narrator wasn’t my favorite. Just watch the movie :)
