It is a very good story, but it's very wordy. So at times especially the beginning of the book it's very slow with all of the descriptions. I enjoyed it very much and learned about crew and the time period, which I really enjoyed. The story was great but you have to push through a good amount to get to the exciting stuff.

If you have ever thought, I really wish I knew more about Rowing…then look no further! Unfortunately, I have not had that thought so there were times when this one dragged for me. There was some really interesting parts. I loved the histories of the athletes so much, and I the portions about the Dust Bowl and WWII were so interesting, I would just feel myself start tuning out as soon as it got too deep in the weeds about rowing and how to make a team and who should be where and I don’t even remember because I just couldn’t care. That’s on me though, I picked a book about Rowing, it’s not like the book hid it lol. I think that Joe and his story are what really carried this one through though. He has lived a fascinating and terribly sad life and I’m glad I got to learn more about it.

Excellent story, lots of historical background, great narration. Highly recommended for anyone--even those of us who don't give a fig about rowing. ;)

This is the best underdog story I’ve ever heard.  And there’s not just one underdog story.  I have been told it’s been made into a movie.  If you want to watch the movie - watch it before you read this book. I don’t think you can watch the movie afterwards, at least not until your memory has faded about this book.

Not only is this a wonderful story of people who shouldn’t who did.  It also give historical context that is brilliant.
Just finished reading and am still sorting through my emotions.  Expect to tear up if not full cry.  Expect also to be out raged by some of the story.  And be prepared to remember that history repeats itself.

who knew i'd care so much about a sport i know nothing about (everyone could have predicted this)
