If you have ever thought, I really wish I knew more about Rowing…then look no further! Unfortunately, I have not had that thought so there were times when this one dragged for me. There was some really interesting parts. I loved the histories of the athletes so much, and I the portions about the Dust Bowl and WWII were so interesting, I would just feel myself start tuning out as soon as it got too deep in the weeds about rowing and how to make a team and who should be where and I don’t even remember because I just couldn’t care. That’s on me though, I picked a book about Rowing, it’s not like the book hid it lol. I think that Joe and his story are what really carried this one through though. He has lived a fascinating and terribly sad life and I’m glad I got to learn more about it.
Excellent story, lots of historical background, great narration. Highly recommended for anyone--even those of us who don't give a fig about rowing. ;)

This is the best underdog story I’ve ever heard. And there’s not just one underdog story. I have been told it’s been made into a movie. If you want to watch the movie - watch it before you read this book. I don’t think you can watch the movie afterwards, at least not until your memory has faded about this book.
Not only is this a wonderful story of people who shouldn’t who did. It also give historical context that is brilliant.
Just finished reading and am still sorting through my emotions. Expect to tear up if not full cry. Expect also to be out raged by some of the story. And be prepared to remember that history repeats itself.

This book was beautifully inspirational. Not only did it tell the history, but it did so in a way that wove all of the many threads of the story together. It’s a beautiful painting of the boys’ lives. When I started it I worried that since I didn’t know anything about rowing that it would leave me in the dust, but it depicts the sport poetically. It was a great introduction to the world of rowing. There are moments where things move more slowly, and moments where I was on the edge of my seat. You know going into the book the outcome of the Berlin Olympics, but every race had me reading with bated breath wondering how the boys would manage to win.

@kayla recommended this book. Great recommendation. My grandpa grew up in Eastern Washington during the great depression, like many of the boys in the boat. He also fell trees, poached salmon, and ate anything offered. I actually feel like I understand my grandpa better. That was a persistent generation!
I recommended the movie to my parents. I think my dad would love to see Eastern Washington and kids with his dad's fighting spirit.
The book was very well written. I could imagine all of the settings. I've been to many of the US locations and they were perfectly described. I can only assume the international descriptions were accurate. I enjoyed seeing the kids growing up juxtaposed against Hitler ramping up to world war II.

Best book I've read all year! :) Who knew the story of a bunch of rowers would be so interesting? I am un-coolly patriotic. This is a great book for this Olympic year.
Very informative book got a little confusing at parts. I hated Joes stepmother. Glad she died.
