Best book I've read all year! :) Who knew the story of a bunch of rowers would be so interesting? I am un-coolly patriotic. This is a great book for this Olympic year.

Very informative book got a little confusing at parts. I hated Joes stepmother. Glad she died.

So I had to wait until I finished this book to really give it a star rating, where as with most books, I know within 40 pages if I'm going to like it. The book reads just like watching rowing, slow at the beginning and building to the crazy finish! Makes me want to start rowing.

Anyone who rowed in college, as I did, will enjoy this story fully.  I’m not sure it will resonate quite as well with others, but the human-interest aspect is undeniable.  I liked his deft interweaving of what was happening in Germany at the same time and particularly enjoyed his explanation of how the rivalry between Washington and California came about.  Brown’s details of each race, even when you knew the outcome, left me breathless!  The epilogue was especially poignant.

Finished and immediately wanted to re-read to catch more about Seattle and UW during this time period. Side note, I listened to this as an audiobook and it was hilarious how many regional names were mispronounced.

When the library circ clerk saw I was borrowing this book, she said, "You're in for a good read." I knew the hype about this book in my suburban town near Seattle where this story takes place, so I had high hopes and feared I might be disappointed. A few pages into this book, though, I knew I was in the hands of a master craftsman of an author. Brown tells the true story of the University of Washington crew team that scrapes and claws their way to victory in the 1936 Olympics. I still wondered how Brown could keep my attention given that I already knew the outcome from the subtitle of the book. Let's just say that Brown gets down and dirty with the details, sparing nothing to tell his story. Get thyself to a bookstore or library and read this book! A "Young Readers Edition" is due out in Sept 2015, and as the parent of a soon-to-be 13 year old boy, I'm gonna buy multiple copies and give them to him and all his friends. This is a story all young men need to hear and read, because it centers on one of the most down-and-out kids in the boat, Joe Rantz, who despite the death of his mother when he was very young and the neglect of his family, never gives up or throws a pity party for himself. As a teacher-librarian, I can't wait to read excerpts of this book to my students and share it with their teachers -- it's revolutionary!
