Wow, this book is brutal! The misery of the Frome household is not easy to read about, though I admire Wharton's construction of the story and the prose style. I liked that the characters were complex, even morally ambiguous, though Wharton's depictions of Zeena makes it difficult to not side with Ethan and Mattie. I wasn't sure about this book after reading the first framing chapter but found that I got invested in the central story fairly quickly. And then things just escalated really quickly from the time Zeena goes to town to the end of the novella. I'm glad I read the book, but I enjoyed The Age of Innocence more, probably because the story was more complicated and the relationships were drawn in more detail. However, Ethan Frome is a well-written and affecting book.

Way better than Romeo & Juliet.

Garbage. And not even hot garbage. Just cold, painfully tedious garbage.
