The first time I tried to read this book, I literally fell asleep in the middle. I didn't like or connect with the characters, and I just plain didn't want to read it (it was a high school reading assignment). I picked it up a few years later, determined to give it a try, and actually got through it. It still isn't my favorite book, but for a short work of literature, it isn't bad. Still, if there's something better on hand, I would choose it instead.
This was kinda depressing and the end was just blah.

A quick, fairly easy read. Everyone said it was unenjoyable, but honestly I quite liked it. The writing by Wharton is incredible. Such a lovely tragedy.
Look, I was a teenage bookworm who actually enjoyed a number of books that most high schoolers hate, including Moby Dick, Beowulf, and even the Scarlet Letter. This book without a doubt was the most painful and pointless assignment I've ever had to endure. The characters are boring and unsympathetic, the writing ponderous, and the plot is absolutely ridiculous. I could think of a dozen ways Frome could have gotten out of his predicament, from running away with his mistress someplace warm to finding a more reliable way to commit suicide than running into a tree on a sled. Perhaps he should have eaten a gun, which is what I wanted to do by the time I was done with this stinker.
