Well, that was certainly bleak! But the writing was lovely and the book was worthwhile. There is a reason it has stood the rest of time. I don’t like tragedies as a rule, but this one brought up lots of old language of family and friends who have long passed on. I’m glad thAt this way of speaking and living life has been preserved for us here.

All I have for you is a word: Karma.

idk man the translation was badly proofread where can i get this editor’s job? because i’d do a better job. also i just… didn’t care much about the characters so by the end of the super slow burn (if i’d blinked i’d have missed the two kisses) i was like oh okay. sad times. anyway—
yea. house of mirth soon maybe? i’m not completely giving up on wharton i don’t think… i’ll read in english next time

A stunning read and so well-written but absolutely bleak and horrible.
The tale is something that I don’t want to re-read in a while. It isn’t uplifting or inspiring. It just is and I hate all the characters and the society they live in. Most probably just as they’re to be experienced.
The atmosphere is stifling and horrifying and the scenery of dark winter is perfect for the novella.
Exquisitely written!

Lectura 2021:

Wharton is a beautiful writer who suffuses all of her descriptions with a languid sorrow in this book about forbidden love. The characters and their motivations develop carefully over the short duration of the book, all wrapped in more complexity than otherwise suggested. The desperation of the situation snowballs until the climactic ending, and even then there's some sucker punches in store. A beautiful and heart-rending read. And though a product of its time, it's not hard to see how this could still happen today.

Despite it being slow-paced and in a cold desolate setting it did keep me engaged, usually I get bored of books like that but I think it was because it wasn't too long of a book. I saw an analysis saying that Edith Wharton's books <end badly> or not the way one would expect and I think it's the case with this book. <I wanted Edith to be with Mattie but I knew that it would be wrong of me to want that and in the end he didn't have to choose he got both of them but not in the way he wanted> and I want to feel bad for Ethan but at the same time I can't help but not, his wanting to be with Mattie personally reminded me of how he "wanted" to be with his wife when she was first helping his mom out, and Mattie is not that different than his wife, she is just something new and different and that's what Ethan wants. His wife acts the way she does because Ethan isn't an amazing husband, he doesn't pay attention to her because he is too busy looking at Mattie the way Ethan used to look at his wife when she would also help out at the house. I don't know if Ethan actually wants a wife or he wants someone to obey him because anytime he talked about Mattie he talked about how he loved how she would immediately do what he asked of her, Mattie wasn't the love of his life, she was just someone that payed attention to him and took care of him when he felt that his wife wasn't doing that, Mattie besides being submissive has no other positive qualities attached to her, she literally doesn't do anything. Of course all in my opinion.
