Everyone is miserable. Then they realize it and try to change their lives. Instead, they ruin their lives and become even more miserable than they were. Lovely story.

"...he was stroking her hair. He wanted to get the feeling of it into his hand, so that it would sleep there like a seed in winter."

i know many found it to be a bore but this book banged out. read it over three days, i think, voraciously. i mean, that passage about ethan yearning for someone to appreciate the magic of nature with him... it reminded me a lot of love for lydia in those long, winding, circumlocutive passages that you either grow to love or don't. i did. i can't wait to pick up another of wharton's novels.
