Pacing in first 20-30% was fast and compelling. Pacing through the rest of the book just seemed off to me. There's something about this type of speculative sci-fi that I've decided means this is a sub-genre I should avoid. I've only read a few books in this sub-genre and have felt the same about all of them, so I have to accept this is a pattern for me. I think it's the frequency of times when the author is clearly thinking "what would we do if we didn't have access to hospitals? or new clothes? or shoes?...." - this is where I get hung up. It seems to me that these speculations don't advance the characters' plot lines.

There was nothing wrong with this book, it just wasn't the book for me. The book was extremely well-written and the author is well established and well known. All of this leads me to believe the book was probably great, but just wasn't a good fit for me.
