Interesting premise but not holding my attention right now. Maybe later.

Bei 10% keine Lust mehr. Ich mag niemanden und nachdem ich in Rezensionen lese, wo die Reise hingeht, lege ich es leichten Herzens weg.

If there is a sequel to this book, I will change my rating to 5 stars. I needed more.

This is a gripping and sometimes horrific thriller with a number of underlying themes. A sudden invasion of aliens forces humans to retreat to the Antarctic. Some boundaries are broken down as humans learn to live together in this extreme environment.  While there is hope and compassion for many, new ethics are explored as genetic modifications are created in order to preserve life for the future. What does love and belonging look like in this 'new world'?

Alright, time for another one of my "not really a review, more of a reaction" posts. I'm gonna give you the cold, hard truth on how I feel about this one.

I have to say, I'm a little disappointed that I waited literally months and months for this to come off hold through my local library to be able to read it. Even for sci-fi, I found so many parts of this story to be unbelievable, it was mildly infuriating. The character development was lacking and scattered when it did occur. The jumping around of the timeline and character's perspectives felt unnecessarily confusing. And dammit, did ALL of the action (though somehow still anticlimactic?) really need to be saved for the last 50 pages? Even at the very beginning as the entire premise of the alien invasion was being set, it felt like the story had flat lined. I thought this was a read that might cool me down in the warmth of summer, but it really just had me all fired up and reading simply out of spite? Because for some reason I could not be bested by this book.

This book is a hard one to rate. If I was going off the first quarter I would easily have given it a five star. It was fast paced, engaging and I needed to read faster to know more. Then it kind of took a turn.

This book has a tendency to introduce new characters and give them very fleshed out stories at inconvenient times. Right as you got hooked on persons story it would flip to another narrator and kind of drag you back or throw you into someone else’s history. It just felt like the author wanted to include all these narratives but they got thrown in at times that pulled me out of the story. I think this book had a lot of interesting ideas behind it but ultimately I was left with a lot of questions that left me feeling pretty bleh at the end.

Like seriously, what was the deal with the aliens?

Loved the premise and the exodus. I wasn't sure about the ending, but I was satisfied enough.
