I read The Winter People by this author and really loved it, but this came up a little short for me. It reminded me a lot of The Winter People, just a little different of a story. It also felt a bit slow. But with that being said, I still enjoyed it and liked the overall story and will definitely be reading more by this author.

Intriguing story. Definitely crazy town

Just finished so more to follow but this was far too similar to The Winter People. I was all in at the beginning, feeling more and more creeped out by midway but in the final third it fell apart. I'm not usually one who guesses the ending of mysteries but this one made it too easy.

Good read!

This is my second Jennifer McMahon novel. The book has a very clever story, and I really do enjoy how she can tell a modern day tale about ghosts and monsters. Once again, though, I did feel she sort of explained too much away at the very end. However, I finished this book in just a few days, and I do highly recommend it. It’s got all of the best ingredients for a fun scary story~ suspense, mystery, and all of the things that go bump in the night! I’m pretty sure this is the same narrator from Winter People, and she does a pretty good job. Occasionally she trends towards whiny but overall she’s someone I can listen to for a good chunk of time without any irritation.

I really liked that there was an actual paranormal explanation for the thriller stuff! Getting real tired of humans being the real monsters. Speaking of monsters, I did not care for the ending being set up so the cop was a savior figure. Gross, unnecessary, and frankly weird since he was also a stalker as a child and later considered being unfaithful to his pregnant wife. Heck of a narrative choice.

This book did not go where I was expecting in a good way, but a lot of points within the plot felt a bit unfinished, making some of the book feel a bit flat.

This has been one of the oddest reads I've had in awhile. The premise sounded incredible so I picked it up and then forgot why I picked it up. Regardless I read the book over a week or so which is longer than a lot of books I read.

I don't want to spoil any of the twists but this book sort of falls into these questions:

1. Do we have an unreliable narrator?
2. Is this a mental illness thing or a supernatural thing?
3. Who is the bad guy exactly?

So it was a fun ride which I figured out about 50% into the book but watching it play out was fun. It's not the most well-written but it certainly was compelling. Even though I've read stronger books, I wanted to know what happened. So I finished it. Props to the author for getting me to finish a book I wasn't loving. It's rare for that to happen.

I really enjoyed this one! I love how the author jumps between time periods and points of view. Despite the fact that I could predict the twists ahead of time, I enjoyed watching the puzzle pieces come together. The perfect book for the weekend before Halloween.
