This book was not for me. I followed my 50 page rule and just could not get into it. I love Austen and I think that's why I couldn't get into it.

I did not connect with any characters.

I did not care for the style of writing (it was too modern, but trying so hard to be like Austen to me - the disconnect was too much).

I didn't find the plot compelling (a girl MUST marry by the end of the season or else her family's estate will fall into the clutches of her sister's abusive husband who she's trying to divorce - I'm calling it now, she ends up with the neighbor who used to be her bff who cast her aside probably because of his abusive father).

It's evident that it's personal preference that's behind the low rating. There's a market for the book, though.

I really loved the romance and period drama aspect of the book! I loved the mystery, the strong female lead, and the twists and turns. HOWEVER, I didn’t like how obvious the mystery was. There was way too many clues that were easy to decipher. I also appreciated the Jane Austen references but it got to be a little too cheesy halfway through. Either way it’s a cute read and I enjoyed it.

I really liked this book and had fun time listening to it. It was a really fun Jane Austen period read with romance, mystery, and comedy. I especially loved really about Vicky dates and the interesting men she met. I really enjoyed Vicky as a main character because she has these ideas as to what a gentleman should be based off her favorite books by Jane Austen. Though she knows that she needs to marry for her family. Even with all that she still stays true to her shelf throughout the book. While to book kept you guessing who the real villain was and who was after her dowery, I did feel it was lacking in the mystery department. The books opens up with a mystery man who does something

Wow, that was fantastic. I loved all the little historical details, and I can tell just how much research must have gone into it. All of the Austen references were great, and again, the attention to historical accuracy in that aspect was amazing. Great characters, very fun, and an element of mystery. So so good.

I'd say that the only thing that made this one YA, was the lack of smexy times. Because, sure, young heroine, but they can be young in adult too, first season and all. So it was like reading a clean adult romance, except there at the end there is a really dangerous situation. Really raw too. So trigger warning there for, oh but if I say it it is a spoiler, but if I do not say it...well danger of rape.

Victoria loves the countryside. But then her sister shows up. And then her parents say that Victoria must find a husband this season.

Her options are not that many. The charming and rich Mr Carmichael (obvi the best option), the guy who takes snuff all the time, or maybe the guy she can't even listen too. Yes not that many options.

Then her best friend shows up, former best friend who left for the continent at 14.

Oh and then there is the weird thing that someone might be trying to harm her, and her family.

Mystery and budding romance, but mostly the mystery of these dangerous situations that keep popping up.

I enjoyed the book. Good speed, and less Ton than an adult romance. And more, I shall do this!

I liked the narrator. She made good distinctive voices and she made some of the suitors sound like such toads in the best way.

The Austen references seemed trivial and not needed. The whole book built up an ending that was rushed. The book may have been better without the constant Austen references just thrown in. The ending was so rushed I honestly just skimmed it because at that point I wanted the book to be done and it was just needlessly drawn out. The ending became predictable and no different from other books.

The story itself was a little hit-and-miss for me, but I do want to say that the research and care that went into this deserves 5 stars by itself. Will be checking out this author's other historical novels!

I enjoyed this book but it definitely wasn’t what I was expecting.

Vicky is the second daughter of a Lord in 1817 and as such has been able to spend her time helping run the family’s beloved estate and reading the books of her favorite author, Jane Austen, instead of attending social functions. However, after an unexpected hardship hits her family, Vicky finds herself in dire need of a husband. She must navigate the London social scene and the duel attentions of an old friend and a new acquaintance in order to save her family and their home, all the while trying to understand the near fatal run-ins that seem to dog her footsteps. Someone couldn’t be trying to kill her, could they?

Everything talks about it being fun, light YA regency romance with some action. Heck, even my summary makes it sound like that. It is all of this things- sometimes. I think this book feels mis-explained because it’s impossible to delve into the darker parts of the story without providing spoilers. I don’t want to harm that part of the reading experience, but I think for enjoyment it’s important to enter this book knowing it gets far more serious in moments.

Above all, this book is about personal agency, especially reclaiming it when those around you, societal structures, or ones own trauma tries to take it from you. The book gets pretty heavy with the abuse faced by two characters. I felt Cohen handled abuse and trauma well and it was unfortunately even more common at that time as it is today.

Unfortunately, I came to this book for a fun YA romance with some elements of action and the discussions of abuse hit me off guard. I still enjoyed the book- the character relationships were sweet, especially between the two pairs of siblings and while the action didn’t always do it for me, the mystery and its conclusion were great.

I think if you enter it knowing that it goes to some dark places, you’ll be more likely to enjoy it.
