Quick, highly intriguing read. Took a partial point off because of all the unanswered questions. I wanted more... In a good way? Very interesting characters. I wish I could get more of their stories.

I appreciated the anecdotal format, I feel it pushed the narrative forward and fast tracked the character development. Eric LaRoca is great at keeping you guessing, whilst simultaneously telling you exactly what’s occurred. This was a dark but fun, queer novella that I would recommend to only a select few; only the worthy.

I hate giving 1 star reviews, but I couldn't stand this book even more. I read this for a horror book club pick and I'm going to be honest, I just skimmed the last story. I couldn't anymore. It was gross. Not even in a fun way, just gross. I actually felt sick to my stomach reading some of these nasty descriptions. And what was the obsession with pregnancy in the first two stories? Like, why? Really.

I found no real redeeming quality in this collection. The writing was not great (if I hear someone spooned something ever again it will be too soon, and how do ears furrow exactly??) It's only January 9th and I'm pretty sure this is going to the top of the worst books I read list for 2024 already.

Ending was very abrupt, little character development, and the "disturbing" things felt they were more there for shock value than to serve any narrative purpose. Still a decent read, though.

collection as a whole - 4 stars

i surprisingly loved the second story the most. we love religious trauma!

for the titular story, i have some mixed feelings. its extremely disturbing and i absolutely love stories about obsession. it was watching a descent into madness  and it made my stomach curl. however, the pacing in this story is super weirdly done and the ‘descent’ into madness is less gradual and more like stepping off of a cliff. it needed 50 more pages of relationship development and then it might have been 5 stars.

I found myself off and saying what the fuck we reading this book, but it was a good book. I won’t lie. The stories were really fun and so weird.

underwhelmingly mediocre. each story had a strong premise and each failed to deliver any kind of interesting, tense, or emotional conclusion. The first two were quite gross--i guess for the shock value?--but weren't scary. Just yucky.
