Never read this after having a meal!!!

I had read some vague stuff about how disturbing this book could be, but I was definitely not prepared for whatever the fck this was. I am beyond disgusted. I can enjoy horrible fictional stories but this seems to be out of my taste completely. I just felt so sick and ready to throw up while reading it.

I can understand how someone in such a vulnerable state can go down that route and spiral so fast but the stories (like the baby jesus christ I'M PRAYING THIS NEVER HAPPENED IN REAL LIFE WTF WTF WTF) where way too much for me and too fast. The relationship barely develops, suddenly the convo turns "sexy" but feels more like 50 shades of grey bad ff (eugh) and then THAT. I won't spoil but, just, NO.

The ending was confusing but reading some theories about the cover, I got my horrifying answer 😳 100% not for me.

Well that was certainly something I just read.

I don't entirely know how to feel about it. On one hand I loved the language used and I could follow the narrative. On the other, it needed about a hundred or more so pages to arrive at where it ended. It just felt like a large portion of the middle got cut. Psychologically, it didn't make sense (to me). However it was certainly creative and well crafted. I was interested enough to read it all. I'm left wondering about Zoe and what the consequences are or should be. For now that is enough.

3 stars because I don't know how I feel.

This might be one of the worst representations of early internet vocabulary & tone setting i’ve ever come across in a horror piece. The in character authors note really sets us up for a comedy poorly considered plot movement between the two main characters. The fact that the early internet & the year 2000 is supposed to be a highlight in this piece while the language Agnes & Zoe use feels right out of prime time Tumblr 15-16 years after the year 2000 is just disappointing.

I was very disappointed when I neared the end of this and realized that I was not going to like it. I am the kind of horror fan that was 100% in after reading just a short paragraph describing this book. The prose itself is great. Both characters have very distinct voices, but I didn't feel like switching between each was jarring. While I did not like how their relationship developed, I think the way they wrote to each other seemed very realistic. I could believe that these were actual e-mails and instant messenger conversations.

What disappointed me about this book is that we don't really see the relationship between the two characters develop. They very quickly go from meeting each other to being completely obsessed. Zoe's sudden interest in being submissive was almost silly. We get very basic psychological profiles of the main characters, but not much else to go on. I would not go as far as to say I felt offended by this book, but I do not think it is an unreasonable opinion. The reader is left to fill in a lot of blanks, and one way of filling those blanks is stereotypes about lesbians and women generally. It does also feel like the book is rushing to get to misery and gross stuff in a way that is not entirely unlike how 50 Shades of Grey is in a hurry to get to the sex scenes.

edit:

reread it and what the fuck. normally i love really weird and disgusting stuff like these so i had high expectations. but this is so underwhelming and bad. and bad. and bad.

on my first read of this i kinda enjoyed it or maybe i was just didnt want to NOT like it cos i was excited to readit for so long. rereading it opened my eyes a bit.

(also what was the point of making them queer? for plot? to make it interesting?? if the main character were straight it literally wouldnt change anything. fix ur shit)
