Very engaging, relatable, thought-provoking, and at times infuriating. Beautiful prose that was still accessible while adding some new words to my vocab! Fascinating premise that the author delivered on well. I loved getting to know these complicated, messy, people.

Some of the time jumps took me out of the story. Right as I was getting into the groove, the next chapter would be in a different point in time, and that made me disengage a bit. Some slight finagling of the order of chapters might’ve helped my reading experience.

Overall super strong read! Def check content warnings on this one

Author did a fantastic job weaving different viewpoints and complex emotions into a clear, concise, and understandable format. The characters were frustrating at times, but they had realistic flaws and strengths and were relatable.

I really wanted to like this book but unfortunately I just didn’t care for it.  I found the characters kinda unlikable.  The best way to describe it was that it was messy.  You really have to be in the right mindset to read it.

The writing was nice but there was just too much mysoginistic nonsense and it often came off as overly sexualize in a toxic/violent way.  I just didn’t really care for it.  The mindset of being violated being a right of passage for woman just gave me the ick.

This book shows the deep complexities of queer polyamory. it does not shy away from showing the characters flaws and biases. i had to put it down a lot during reading because some parts were really hitting close to home, or just brutally painful to read, like watching a car crash and being unable to do anything .

i definitely still reccomend this book to people, especially those who are queer and poly. just be prepared to feel a lot of emotions, and to be faced with things you thought only you experienced written down in a book.

Well, shit. This book left me feeling complicated. I can see why many people love it, it was very well written, it was raw and messy and I think it did a really good job of imagining queer possibilities. I also loved the surprise Rogers Park mention!! I think there’s some feelings coming up around immersing myself in a trans femme experience as a trans man, about my own relationship with womanhood and the ways it has evolved before and through my transition. There’s something to be said here about how I think this is the first book I’ve read with a trans woman mc and how that is a big gap in my reading. I’m glad we read this for book club because I don’t know if I would have read this myself.

I read this book very quickly. Does that mean it was very good, or did I have a long train ride and did I push myself to read instead of staring out of the window ‚unproductively‘?
After finishing the novel, I feel blank, but I know that it has inspired me to think about myself in old and new ways. I’ve both related to and hated the main characters, and in a way this may be the starting point for me to less abstractly think about how I want to or don’t want to relate to raising kids in a queer way.
The constant jumping back and forth between past and present didn’t work too well for me.
