I really wanted to love this book but I just couldn’t get into it. I feel like I can see how/what the big shock will be and I don’t know it wasn’t exciting enough to keep me reading
to be frank, my library loan expired and i didnt feel like picking the book back up.

its two minutes passed midnight as i write this, and thats bc i really wanted to finish the book and get my thoughts done without forgetting. This book is very important to me, and I wanted to do it justice. you may have guessed by how seriously im taking this that I myself am aroace, i have been waiting anxiously to read this book bc there just isnt any aroace rep anywhere (well its just really hard to find) i was actually scared going into this that i wouldnt be able to relate to these characters bc they would be on a different part of the spectrum than me. i was very happy to see that they matched my inner monolog to a t and that i could relate to both jo and sophie despite the fact that they have very different personalities. i also related to other facts about them that made the whole reading experience kind of surreal for me (jos gender identity and sophies mom not quite getting it)
overall this book was great; i hardly ever know what to expect from fiction novels that have no mystery/thriller element and arent fantasy/sci-fi and are just happening in reality bc how do you make that compelling to read - how do you fill 350 pgs with that and not be dull. but i think this book actually did a really good job of keeping me engaged, maybe bc this was the first time id really seen my sexuality represented on paper, but i did have fun with it. in part to the amount of references that had me cheesing to myself (She-ra, Percy Jackson, The Good Place, 'Oh No!' by MARINA, 'Never Been In Love' by Will Jay, Tumblr/TikTok ace discourse i was actually present for, etc etc)
there were some not good elements of it - this book is the miscommunication trope (which i dont like) with a technically third act "break-up" but god was it done right. some of their descions frustrated me but not to the point where i stopped enjoying myself - especially bc they were selfaware and being called out by the other characters. another thing was the beginning felt very odd, and by beginning i mean first 50 pgs maybe. the conversations just werent flowing right and didnt sound natural. once you got closer to 100 pgs (hell 70) the conversations were flowing/sounding a lot better. but these were my only two minor grievances with the book, everything else was fantastic.
relationships were believable, characters were consistant and believable. even minor characters were incredibly well written and important to the story. this was a love story about a platonic relationship, if the preexisitng and background relationships werent solid that wouldve been a failure, but they were great and i loved a lot of the bg characters.(special shout out to sophies (mc) relationship with her mom, that showed a really good representation of a mom who isnt really on the level with her daughters aroaceness but still loves and cares about her - can relate)
i recommend this book to any aroace reader who wants to see themself in the pages, and to any other reader to be able to see good representation of aroace people. of course, like i said, its a spectrum, so its not possible to get the whole experience, but its great for what it is.
