Entertaining and light despite the heady premise. The plot felt slightly repetitive at points, andwhen you get to the end you realize it has been to set the stage for the sequel, which I do plan to read.
The premise is good, but the writing is strange and the characters, no, just no. When the narrator comments about a female character: "she would be beautiful if only...." more than once, more than 5 times, then it's time to do something about the writing. Yeah, not interested in reading on.
Very dated language and views of women and minorities.
Fascinating idea. I didn't realize until I just looked it up that the characters are based on actual people. The pacing was a bit off, though as the story meanders a bit in places. It makes more sense knowing that this is the first book among five, at least. I enjoyed it and will likely read the sequels.
This was a strange book, but in a good way. It’s very unique compared to anything else I’ve read, though I can’t really place why, so this review is going to be difficult.
I initially picked this one up because it has Sir Richard Francis Burton as a main character and I thought that was interesting. I’m glad I did read it, because, like I said, it’s very different, and an extremely fantastical and otherworldly book.
The mix of characters makes for an interesting story in itself, but combine that with the mystery of why everyone is there, along with Burton’s curious nature to learn more and to explore, and you get an interesting tale because no one else is delving this deep into the why of their new lives.
I enjoyed the parallel between Burton and Goering’s lives towards the end, and I also thought it was very apt that even in this wonderful afterlife people still find excuses to harm and kill one another.
I will be picking up the next book in this series to see how things play out - that said, there must be a lot more to this than I thought seeing as there are five books in the series, so hopefully it all remains relevant.
