"http://nwhyte.livejournal.com/1304773.html[return][return]It is rather a good romp with scary children and scary monsters, Ten and Rose and a creepy Welsh island. Very well read by Anthony Stewart Head."

I just love these hardcovers.

In the TARDIS Rose is having a nightmare about a monster & child.

The Doctor & Rose end up in a fishing village in the UK & help a community where monsters abound while children are sleeping.

Maybe your typical mad scientist is resurrecting an evil ancient alien?

If you love these books then you’ll enjoy this one too.

Mike Tucker has captured the voice of Rose and the Tenth Doctor perfectly nicely, giving them just those sort of quirky Doctor Who moments we love. The prose, though, is oversimplified: filled with page-long descriptions and little character depth. Since we already know the characters, and the imagery is very apt and vivid, that style of writing works in his favour. Where there is little plot movement, the spooky atmosphere keeps you engaged. The children, the nightmares, the creepy man in the wheelchair, the angry Ms. Peyne: the book has all the elements of horror. The ending is a bit unsurprising and sensationalized; but it also just somehow works. The whole book reads like an hour long episode, and it's easy to ignore that little predictability. I suppose these books would make great reads for someone whose default state isn't in a book. If you love the Tenth Doctor like I do, and have a hard time getting involved in books, read this. The Nightmare of Black Island is quick, funny, original and exciting.

I'd been too busy this month to read anything other than that one book I read weeks ago. What with little time and lots of work, this was just the guilty-pleasure-YA break I needed.

While this was enjoyable, I was not blown away. I found the story to be very basic for the Doctor, and not really much of a challenge. It's a fun quick read but I was left feeling like it could have been better. It never really got to that break-neck adventure pace that I have come to expect and there was not nearly enough running!

I loved this book. Sometimes it can be really hard to capture the Doctor and Rose but Mike Tucker did it brilliantly. The only downside was that it was very reminiscent of the 4th Doctor story Horror of Fang rock.

But I really enjoyed it and its now one of my favorites.

Well... yeah.

Another Ten/Rose adventure, read by Anthony Stewart Head.

While I’m the very first to admit that Anthony Stewart Head has one of the most wonderful voices (speaking and singing) I’ve ever listened to, I have to say that he’s not very good at “impersonating” people. Or voices. He says so himself during a short behind-the-scenes discussion with author Mike Tucker, that’s also included on this CD. And... sorry, but he’s right. He doesn’t sound like the Tenth Doctor at all.

No, that’s not a bad thing. I mean, I couldn’t copy a speach pattern if my life depended on it, but... well, in this case it just... I don’t know, it just “disturbs the flow” a little. At least for me.

Other than that, I really liked it, and I think it’s a total must-have for Anthony Stewart Head fans.

This is a book that promises a lot, but never delivers. The characters and the setting never feel like they stand out, and there's a lot of wasted potential. The plot itself is a very mediocre, run of the mill monster story that offers little that hasn't been done better before. It is readable, however.

2.5/5

This book is amazingly fantastic. The way it is written reflects the tenth doctor perfectly. Although the ending was quite disappointing, the way it seemed to magically have all sorts of crazy solutions, but that's the great thing about doctor who. He always finds a way out of things even if they sound completely insane. It was written in a way that I could see it as a group of episodes and I found myself actually wishing for it to be one so I could see all of the characters come to life. I loved the character Ali! She was such a fantastic little girl, smart, brave and very cheeky. Someone who fits perfectly on the show. Rose was portrayed perfectly in the literary form and I could see Billie piper fitting into it beautifully. Well done Mike Tucker!
Overall, I thoroughly enjoyed this book. Can't wait to read the next ones!

Best one I've read in a while
